The United States achieved
greatness due to the striving of countless
Americans to improve their lives. Contemporary
Americans owe a debt of gratitude to the millions of people
who emigrated to the United States seeking only the freedom
to fail or succeed based upon their own innate abilities. The vast majority of immigrants succeeded in providing for
their families, yet they also built a nation while pursuing
their dreams without any intervention on the part of the
federal government. In my view, they were successful
because they had no one to rely on but themselves.Racism and sexism still exist
in our society, but a great deal of progress has been made
toward making our society more tolerant.
I align myself with the
majority of conservatives in Congress who do not support
race or gender based quotas or preferences, contending that
affirmative action programs are actually a form of reverse
discrimination and, as such, are counter-productive,
divisive, and invidious.
While I respect the rights of
gay people to make their own lifestyle choices, I believe
homosexual marriage grants a special right that diminishes
the importance of traditional marriage in our society.
